Chondroitin sulphate is a molecule made of repeating units of glucuronic acid and N-acetylgalactosamine and is naturally found in our bodies. It is widely used for treating joint pains and osteoarthritis. It can also be manufactured from animal sources like shark or cow cartilage
Chondroitin sulphate serves a lot in the pharmaceutical industry. It is given as oral medicine for treating HIV/AIDS, for regulating blood pressure and cholesterol in the body, treats the side effects like joint pain due to cancer and chemotherapy, helps in bladder problem and reduces itchiness when it comes to psoriasis.
It has been approved by FDA and sold together with glucosamine in the market. It is taken as dietary supplement for treating joint pains.
Chondroitin sulfate is usually extracted from cartilages and bones of various animals like sharks, cows, ducks etc. Since chondroitin is not a uniform substance, and is naturally present in a wide variety of forms, the precise composition of each supplement will vary.
Extract the pig laryngeal, nasal cartilage with 2% sodium hydroxide. Use crude trypsin to remove other proteins of the extract at 50 °C. Filtrate, adjust the pH of enzymatic hydrolysis solution to 6, and add ethanol to make a final ethanol concentration of 75%. Centrifuge and obtain the precipitate namely chondroitin sulfate crude product. Apply Multi-step refinement to obtain the finished product. For Pig throat, nasal cartilage count, the yield is 5%.
Used as food and dietary supplements.
For eyes : Used in eye drops and used during cataract surgeries.
For osteoarthritis : the typical dose of chondroitin sulfate is 800-2000 mg taken as a single dose or in two or three divided doses daily for up to 3 years taken by oral. Can be taken in the form of injection as well, directly injected into muscles.
For urinary tract infections: 0 mL of a specific solution containing chondroitin sulfate and hyaluronic acid (iAluRil, IBSA Farmaceutici), has been inserted into the bladder once weekly for 4 weeks, and then once or twice monthly for up to 5 months.
